School is back in session, and the parking lots aren’t getting any less car congested.
On the flip side, a small population of students commute to school in a way the average LA resident would find unconventional: the bus. Several students commute to and from Schurr High School by public transportation, utilizing local transit systems like LA Metro and municipal bus systems like Montebello Bus Lines and City of Commerce Transit.
Historically, public transportation has always been a cheap option compared to driving. Montebello Bus Lines haven’t enacted fare hikes since 2009, nearly 16 years. The student fare remains 75 cents—a 68% discount from the adult base fare—offering affordable transportation options to all youth.
Beginning 2022, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA), affectionately known as LA Metro, introduced the Fareless System Initiative (FSI), granting free transit passes to participating schools.
